THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN

Rev. Carter Moore, The Church Triumphant of Columbus

KEY VERSE ~ ROMANS 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (KJV)

FOCUS ~ In the beginning, when the Lord was speaking to Cain, He told him that if he did well, he would be accepted. But if he didn’t, sin would be lying at his door. We know that Cain transgressed God’s law. This happened to our first family; thus, sin has been with us ever since. The greatest thing that Jesus Christ could do for us is to help us know how to deal with the Adamic curse.

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines SIN as an offense against God, religion, or good morals. Strong’s also tells us that it is “to miss the mark.”

Origin of sin

  • Sin began in the Garden of Eden with the first man and woman. At that time, there was only one commandment (Genesis 2:17) (Genesis 3:6-10, 24). Genesis 4:7 gives us a picture of how sin desires to destroy us. Although sin may have its moments of pleasure and excitement, it will lead us to guilt, shame, and eternal punishment.

Who has sinned?

  • Because of the sin of Adam, the entire human race has come under the curse of sin (Romans 5:14; Psalm 51:5; 1 Kings 8:46).

Steps toward sin

  • James 1:13-15 says, “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” (KJV) Romans 1:18-31 gives a descriptive path toward sin along with a wide list of actions and attitudes that God considers sin, and Romans 1:32 also provides a strong warning against those who take pleasure in them that sin. Even though we do not commit the actual sin, we are just as guilty if we take pleasure in them who do.

It is very important what we choose to consider as entertainment (what we watch, listen to, and read). Psalms 101:2-3 says, “I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” (KJV)

What is the penalty for sin?

  • Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (KJV) (James 1:15) “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” (KJV)

How can we be delivered from sin?

  • We can only be delivered from sin by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. No one can either earn salvation or overcome their own sin (Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation is a gift from God (John 3:16; Romans 5:8). Jesus warns us that we must believe “on him as the scripture hath said” (John 7:38), which includes believing and applying or (obeying) the gospel (death, burial and resurrection) to our lives, or we would die in our sins. (John 8:24)

As stated earlier, death is the penalty for sin (Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:22). Because all humankind is guilty of sin, we are disqualified from being a suitable sacrifice, even for ourselves. To provide a suitable sacrifice, God manifested Himself in flesh as Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only sinless man who ever lived and was undeserving of death; therefore, He was the only one who could be the perfect substitute. Our sins are pardoned only when we look to Christ, realizing that our sins are what led Him to the cross.
