UNITY

Rev. Carter Moore, The Church Triumphant of Columbus

KEY VERSE ~ PSALM 133:1-3

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.” (KJV)

FOCUS ~ Jesus prayed an awesome prayer in the book of John - that they all might be one - and then explained, “That they all may be one; as thou Father art in me … that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” The purpose of being in Unity is so that others will see Jesus in us.

UNITY is defined as the quality or state of not being multiple a condition of harmony: accord; continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action); the quality or state of being made one.

Unity was spoken about, taught, and achieved in the early years of the New Testament Church. Jesus said, “Every kingdom or house divided against itself shall not stand” (Matthew 12:25).

The Church was in one accord (Acts 1:14) (Acts 2:1).

The Church had All Things Common (Acts 2:44-47).

Why it is Pleasant for Brethren to Dwell Together in Unity? (Psalm 133:1-3)

  • The precious ointment was one of a kind, not duplicated (Exodus 30: 22-25, 30). It was poured upon the head of Aaron (Ephesians 1: 22-23). Christ (the anointed one and High Priest) is the head of the body (Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 1:18; Hebrews 4:14).
  • The oil ran down upon the beard (Jeremiah 48:37). A clipped beard represented defeat, whereas the unified body of Christ is victorious. (Psalm 44:5; Luke 10:19; Romans 8:35, 37; Revelation 15:2).
  • The oil went down to the skirts of his garment (1 Corinthians 12:12). The whole body was covered with the anointing oil.
  • The oil was as the dew of Herman, and as the dew that descended upon the Mountains of Zion. Dew formed so heavily on the mountains, it was though it had rained; it also brought life (John 10:10).

o   For the Lord commanded the blessings, even life forevermore. Not only do we have eternal life with Jesus to look forward to (Matthew 25:46; John 6:27; John 10:27-29), we also have His blessings in this life (Luke 18:29-30).
